ASGCLA sponsored the Assembling Your Consultant Tool Kit: What you Need to Know to Become a Successful Consultant Pre-conference at the 2019 ALA Annual Conference. The workshop conducted by ASGCLA members Nancy Bolt, Nancy Bolt & Associates and Liz Bishoff, The Bishoff Group, was attended by more than 45 librarians and library workers. The pre-conference attendees learned about the different types of consulting services, completed an assessment of their aptitude for consulting, identified specific areas where they would be interested in consulting as well as what types of libraries and other organizations they would offer their services to.
The attendees learned about developing a business plan, including pricing their services, budget elements of a consulting business, as well as how to identify their market. Discussions were held regarding promoting a consulting business. During the afternoon session, the attendees reviewed a sample RFP and the response. There were in-depth discussion regarding managing and responding to RFPs.
Throughout the session the attendees worked in small group sessions, allowing them to explore their various skills, as well as develop a network of future consultants. The session concluded with a review of the ASGCLA Consultant’s Code of Ethics.
