In recognition of Mental Health Month, the Association of Specialized Government and Cooperative Library Agencies (ASGCLA), a division of ALA, encourages you to check out our free toolkit designed to help you create a positive library environment for patrons with mental health issues. Our toolkits provide guidance on how to interact with people with mental illness, and how to correct negative stereotypes.
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, approximately one in five adults in the United States experiences mental illness in a given year. Approximately 18 percent of American adults have experienced an anxiety disorder, and about 16 million adults had at least one depressive episode in the past year. To learn what steps you can take to raise awareness about mental illness and to build a more inclusive library community, please visit the websites of the advocacy and educational organizations provided at the end of the toolkit. We also encourage you to visit the ASGCLA website at www.asgcladirect.org
